He is seen winning running and swimming races. The picture takes us back to his beloved Hisa, who is very lonely, and her grief is added to by the death of her father. As he is passing away he administers to her "Katano," or the oath of the sword, which means that in case she commits sin, she is bound by honor to commit hara-kiri, killing herself with the sacred family sword. She is left with her mother and brother. Then the film shows more triumphs of Masao at the University, and a letter from him telling of his love for Hisa. At a reception on the University field day he meets Captain Doane and his wife. Next we see Capt. Doane boarding his ship and going out through the Golden Gate. The ship is wrecked by a typhoon near the Japanese shore, and Doane, almost dead, is rescued from the water by Hisa and her brother. He is taken to Hisa's house, and when he is convalescent a love springs up between them, Hisa forgetting Masao completely. Misa's brother does not approve of the new love, but is powerless to prevent it, and we see Hisa married to Doane, who decides to forget his wife at home and take a new name. He establishes himself, and in another year is in control of the local fishing industry. Next we see Masao, after his four years' course, taking leave at college. He comes home, and not knowing Hisa is married, goes to her house. He finds her with a baby, and is astonished. Just then Doane comes in, and Masao recognizes and denounces him. Doane flees. Masao follows, and after a hard fight kills him. When Masao returns to Hisa's house he finds that she has kept the oath of the sword, and killed herself for the sin of her unfaithfulness.

Jim testifies that he intended to kill Knox but found him dead already. During an angry all-night deliberation, the jury remains deadlocked 11-to-1, with Grace voting against a guilty verdict. In the morning, when she learns that her sister Edith has died, Grace confesses to killing Knox for seducing Edith and failing to honor his promise of marriage. After the foreman reminds the jury of their oath to keep their proceedings secret, they agree not to reveal Grace's story, and vote to acquit Jim.

While the men are away from camp fishing, a wandering stranger from the North happens upon Lydia, the king's daughter, asleep, and is desperately smitten with her unusual beauty. Upon the return of the men he discovers that Lydia is interested in one of the men of the party, Nordo, and seizes an opportunity while the camp is about to sit down to a feast presents himself, and asks a kindly reception. The king receives him as a guest. In the dead of night, while the camp is asleep, he attempts to steal into the cave which shelters Lydia, but is frustrated by the ever-watchful Nordo, who, crazed with rage at this attempted desecration of his sweetheart's resting place, is about to stab him when Lydia reminds him of the laws of hospitality. Olaf at the first opportunity proposes marriage to Lydia, and demands her hand from the king, the king disdainfully spurns his offer, and Olaf challenges, according to the ancient Norse law, Lydia's champion to fight for her hand. Lydia chooses her favorite, Nordo. A bloody duel is immediately fought, and Nordo conquers. Olaf is nursed back to health by the beautiful Lydia, and again protests his love. One day a messenger arrives from Voldor, the father of Olaf, demanding his return alive, to expiate his unpardonable offense against the god Odin. Olaf makes good his escape from the camp, and the king vows that if Olaf is not captured alive, he will sacrifice his daughter to the sea. Nordo starts out to find Olaf. Olaf from a safe hiding place has overheard the king's vow, and plans a desperate revenge. He allows Nordo to see him, and when pursued feigns an injury. He grapples with Nordo, but by a mischance Nordo, in the struggle, throws him over the cliff. Nordo returns to the camp brokenhearted with the sad news. The king fulfills his vow, but Nordo, unknown to the rest, dives from the foot of the cliff and raises the maiden from the bottom of the sea. Olaf was only stunned by his fall from the cliff, and returns to the sad-hearted king, knowing that his revenge has been accomplished. Nordo sees Olaf alive and under the protection of Lydia's father, and hastens back to her with the joyful news that she can rejoin her family. The king receives his daughter back from the grave, and blesses them both.

- Driven from Russia by the persecution of the police, who had caused the death of his wife, was Ivan Pavloff, a Nihilist, accompanied by his two infant twin daughters Olga and Nina, en route to America in search of freedom. During the voyage Pavloff becomes acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Victor Karenin, wealthy Russians returning from a tour of the Continent, and who had lost their only child while abroad. Mrs. Karenin becomes devoted to Pavloff's little daughter, Nina, and offers to help Pavloff when they arrive in America if he is unable to secure work. After becoming located in America, Pavloff finds that he cannot obtain employment, and goes to the Karenins to seek their aid. He consents to their proposition that they adopt Nina as their own child. Twenty years pass. Pavloff, now an American leader of the Nihilists, has won fame as a writer on Nihilism. His daughter, Olga, now educated, assists him in his work. Olga, through a newspaper discovers that her sister, Nina, is soon to marry John Huntington, connected with the State Department at Washington. As time passes Olga's father is induced to return to Russia and assist in the destruction of Savaroff, Chief of Police. The following day Olga and her father take solemn oath to revenge the death of her mother, and in order that they may not be discovered, or in case of arrest, that one or the other may reach Russia, and thus escape to fulfill their oath, they travel over different routes. They meet in Russia at the appointed time and place and become affiliated with the Nihilists. Back in America John Huntington has received an appointment to the diplomatic post in Warsaw. He pleads with Mr. Karenin to permit the marriage of his adopted daughter, Nina, to himself before he departs for Warsaw. Karenin objects, saying that he has arranged for Mrs. Karenin to tour Europe for the sake of her health, and he wishes Nina to accompany her. But upon their return he will consent to their marriage. A few weeks after Mrs. Karenin has sailed, Huntington receives final notice of his appointment and sails for Warsaw. At a meeting of the Nihilists, held at their headquarters in the Lamond Chateau, final arrangements are made for the killing of the chief. One of Savaroff's spies learns of the meeting and notifies him. The soldiers make a raid on the chateau. Pavloff and Olga are captured. Savaroff tries to secure the secrets of the Nihilists by torturing Pavloff with the horrible death rays. Pavloff refuses to reveal the secrets. Savaroff attracted by Olga's beauty agrees to save her father if she will give herself to him for the night. She finally consents and Pavloff is rewarded. Olga goes to Savaroff's home and awaits his arrival. While there she overhears a conversation between Savaroff's secretary and the Assistant Prefect of Police, and learns that her father has died. Savaroff enters, and she asks him what has become of her father. He tells her that he has recovered. During a struggle in which she pretends to appreciate his embrace, she slabs him to death with a knife. Savaroff having previously given instruction to the guards to permit Olga to leave the palace unmolested, she escapes easily. She goes to the Bristol restaurant, the rendezvous of the Nihilists, to meet Gaganov, a comrade. The same evening, John Huntington, having arrived in Warsaw to undertake his duties at the American Consulate, goes forth on pleasure bent, and drops in at the Bristol restaurant for refreshments. He is recognized by Olga as her sister's fiancé. It immediately occurs to her that if she can convince him of her peril he will aid her to escape to America. Huntington sees her, and knowing that Nina is in Europe, mistakes her for his sweetheart and rushes over to greet her. Instantly she conceives of a scheme to get out of the country without trouble, and permits Huntington to believe that she is Nina. Through this misidentification they escape to America. Meanwhile in Paris, Nina and her mother having failed to locate Huntington, decide to return to America before the holidays. In Warsaw the police are making every effort to locate Olga and send detectives, one to Hamburg and one to Paris. Petrovitch, the spy of the Russian police, on arrival in Paris, mistakes Nina for Olga. He determines to follow her to America and avenge the death of his cousin Savaroff. Amazov, the Hamburg detective, having lost the trail, proceeds to America in the hope of doing his duty after locating Olga. As the story ends the real destroyer of Savaroff pays the penalty, while Nina and her sweetheart are reunited in eternal happiness.
- Captain Mark Stone of the freighter, Annabel, gets word from his fiancée that she has decided to marry another man. He puts back to port and arrives just after the wedding ceremony. Forcing his way into the house, he faces the girl and swears vengeance, vowing that he will marry and rear children to hate her children as he hates her. Next day her father uses his influence to have Stone discharged. Stone lies in wait for him on the wharf, and through an accident he is injured in the head. A specialist is doubtful whether he will recover his sight. Mindful of his oath, Stone proposes marriage to May Manning, the slavey at his boarding house, and she accepts. Later, their child is born, a girl. At the news, the blind man stumbles from the house in a rage of disappointment, and, meeting with an old shipmate, goes on a voyage with him. One of the crew bears a grudge against Stone, and seeing him helpless, drops him overboard on a dark night. The shock restores his sight. Reaching the shore, he makes his way to a fisherman's cabin, where a doctor, in attendance upon the fisherman's wife, declares that Stone's normal mind, deranged by a former blow on the head, has also been restored. His one idea now is to get back to his wife and child. But they have disappeared from the old home. May, his wife, seeks work to support her child and becomes a dishwasher in a cheap waterfront restaurant. Stone, seeking her, is recognized on the street by his former sweetheart, who, having left her husband for another man, is now an outcast. To avoid her he enters the restaurant and there comes face to face with May. Explanations ensue, and he discovers that the weapon he chose to work evil against the woman he once hated has turned to love in his hands.

- Juan Calero, defending his home against the invasion of two intoxicated Rurales, has been killed. In the time of this stress, Juan's daughter, Julia, is befriended by Inez Lopez, daughter of a wealthy neighbor. At the outbreak of the insurrection Julia sees her chance to he avenged. She begs to be allowed to join the Revolutionists and the oath of allegiance is administered. A few days later the Insurrectos learn that Captain Maderas, commanding the Government forces, is in the vicinity. He is captured by a squad of the Rebels and sentenced to be shot. Julia, having seen Inez, her benefactress, in Maderas's arms is wavering between her oath of allegiance and the debt of gratitude she owes. She communicates to Maderas in his cell the knowledge that she has extracted the bullets from the cartridges in the guns of the firing squad. Maderas plays his part well at the time of the execution, for as soon as the blank cartridges are fired he tumbles into the grave which has been dug for him. The grave is covered over, but after the soldiers have gone Julia uncovers it again and with Maderas makes her way to the Government camp to receive the thankful prayers of Inez and Maderas.
- Hugh Coleman, a poor young man, secretly marries Minna Hart, the daughter of a wealthy banker. Hugh attempts to break the news to Minna's father gently by appearing to ask permission to marry her, but before the truth is revealed, the father staunchly forbids the marriage of his Jewish daughter to a Gentile of no means. When Minna's father is murdered, Hugh becomes the prime suspect.
- Amy and Helene are sisters. The boys on their father's ranch are about to commence the regular round-up, and are to be gone for almost a half year, for the boundaries of the old ranchman's lands are far between and his cattle number hundreds of thousands. Favorite among the boys is Tom, and this it true with the girls also, who are actually in love with him. However, Tom's love is bestowed on Helene. As the boys, on this day, are bidding all good-bye, Tom is upstairs being secretly wedded to Helene by the parson, who had entered through the window. Not long after the boys had left the ranchman is mortally stricken. Before passing away he confides to Amy that Helene is not her sister. The cowboys return eight months later and preparations are made for a rousing welcome by the girls. Then Amy realizes the love of Tom for Helene. Amy enters the festooned room alone, destroying everything her hands clutch and cursing aloud the sister who had succeeded, and proclaims to the crowd that Helene is not her sister. Tom then acknowledges his secret marriage, whereupon Amy utters a shriek and falls into the arms of the boys. Weeks after, upon recovering from her illness, Amy attempts to leave, but is intercepted by Helene, who imparts a bit of news which turns her sorrow into joy. She will stay and help care for the coming child. Whereupon love is again awakened to her.
